Surtsey

This is the crew of the fishing vessel Isleifi II, Vestmann Islands, which witnessed the first signs
of an eruption of the sea, in the early morning hours of 14, Nov. 1963. They were 7 km
west of Geirfuglaskeri, The flying seagulls were
probably the first living things which hit the island. The eruption stopped on 5, June. 1967 .
The island was approximately 2.8 km2. Today, erosion has eliminated half of the island.
Life has taken root, there are twenty species of plants and five species of birds.
Surtsey is a protected area and only scientists with special permite are allowed to visit the island.
